Frequently asked questions

What is X% of Y?

Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. Example: 20% of 150 = (20 × 150) ÷ 100 = 30.

What percent is X of Y?

Divide X by Y and multiply by 100. Example: 30 is what percent of 150? (30 ÷ 150) × 100 = 20%.

How do I calculate percent increase or decrease?

Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value, and multiply by 100. A positive result is an increase; negative is a decrease. Example: from 80 to 100 → (100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25% increase.

Is this calculator free?

Yes — completely free, no account needed, works on phones, tablets, and desktops.

How do I calculate percentage increase between two numbers?

Subtract the old number from the new number, divide by the old number, then multiply by 100. Example: sales grew from 50 to 75, so (75 − 50) ÷ 50 × 100 = a 50% increase. Use the “% increase / decrease” tab above and it does this instantly.

What is the difference between percent change and percent difference?

Percent change measures growth relative to the starting value — from 80 to 100 is a 25% increase. Percent difference compares two values relative to their average, and is used when neither is clearly the “before” — the same two numbers have about a 22.2% difference. For everyday questions like price changes, percent change is what you want.

How do I calculate a sale discount price?

Multiply the original price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). A 25%-off $80 jacket: 80 × 0.75 = $60. Or flip it around: the “X% of Y” tab with 25% of 80 gives you the $20 savings.
